Deep Freeze Your PC Problems
Fingers crossed - maybe I've sorted some of the computer problems I last spoke about!
It's a program called Deep Freeze Version 6. I'm still testing and coming to grips with it, but it certainly has promise.
The big challenge was sorting the original problems, and after much hunting and hair-tearing and midnight oil, I managed to fix even the 'one-way' networking glitch which officially does not exist in Windows XP.
At that point, with a clean, working system, I installed a 60-day trial of Deep Freeze. Now, every time I reboot, the entire system is taken back to its clean state. So any problems or nasties that have installed themselves since then get zapped! Just like that.
In theory, it's great. No more hours spent running anti-everything programs and their deadly updating routines. And peace of mind.
The downsides are mainly changing my way of operating. I can't just save to my hard drive any more, or retain changes, because they'll be gone as soon as I reboot.
So to handle that, I've set up a separate data drive to save to. Once a week I'll unfreeze the main drives and re-file what I must. Or install a new program. Then freeze it again.
I've also offloaded all email to web-based systems.
Gradually I'm getting used to it, and each day I find something I can do a little easier or smarter. The big change is in way of thinking - and how much I really do NOT need to store.
Not for everybody, but it's a decent free trial period, and private use cost is cheaper than all the anti-everything programs.
